Letter to Jabez Firch [sic] [manuscript], 1808 November 21.

Jefferson responds to an adress from Taber Fitch on behalf of the Republicans of the state of Connecticut. He notes that he has the example of George Washington to follow in retiring from office after two terms and justifies the Embargo as the best alternative to submission and tribute, or war. The letter was sent to the New York Herald Tribune by George H. Milne of Lakeville, Conn., as he believes the problems Jefferson was discussing were pertinent to the situation in the United States in 1940.
